Storage technologies pave the way for a renewable-powered future

Low-cost cleaner energy is altering conventional power generation models. As it reaches higher penetration levels in front of and behind the meter, it’s even altering the grid itself. Solar and wind power give power generators and consumers an affordable new option for producing and purchasing electricity, but also create new challenges. To match demand with intermittent supply, utility-scale energy storage remains a critical part of the flexibility puzzle.

The next generation of end-to-end renewable energy solutions is paving the way to abundant and affordable renewable energy storage. This storage enables a path to a decarbonized power grid by shifting renewable energy use a few hours, days, weeks or even seasons.

At Mitsubishi Power, our mission is to provide power generation and storage solutions to our customers, empowering them to affordably and reliably combat climate change and advance advance human prosperity. Our hydrogen strategy is about enabling you to succeed in the next phase of decarbonization by providing solutions for a change in power.

Evolving Short-Duration Storage

Battery energy storage systems are emerging as one of the solutions to increase system flexibility. As the global power sector experiences dramatic changes in power generation, lithium-ion batteries are great for intra-day storage and small-scale variations. With decades of experience creating energy storage systems, Mitsubishi Power offers lithium-ion battery solutions either as an individual product or as part of a larger integrated energy solution.

Achieving Long-Duration Energy Storage with Green Hydrogen

The potential of green hydrogen is inextricably linked with renewable resources such as wind and solar. During high generation periods, the excess electricity they create can power electrolysis equipment to produce green hydrogen. However, if the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing, these energy sources need a backup to avoid an interruption of power. That’s where stored green hydrogen comes in. It can be mixed in increasing proportions with natural gas for power generation with reduced carbon emissions, up to 100% green hydrogen for zero carbon emissions.

Long-Duration Energy Storage:
The Key to Achieving Power-Sector Decarbonization

Market forces, innovation, and regulatory policies are setting the stage for a clean power system, and utilities will play a central role in reshaping the energy economy. While non‑renewable resources are being retired to make progress towards decarbonization objectives, there is a rising need for renewable, dispatchable energy. Adequately meeting the needs of today’s energy grid with renewable resources requires a shift towards long duration energy storage.
